Who Helps Me Decide Ad.png

This workshop is designed for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and their families or support people to explore important tools for fostering independence while ensuring the necessary support systems are in place. Together, we will navigate key topics such as guardianship, power of attorney, and supported decision-making.

Participants will:

Learn about Guardianship: Understand what guardianship means, how it impacts decision-making, and when it might be appropriate.

● Explore Power of Attorney: Gain insight into the role of a power of attorney, how it differs from guardianship, and how it can be a helpful tool for individuals seeking independence while securing needed support.

● Understand Supported Decision-Making: Discover how supported decision-making works, offering a less restrictive alternative to guardianship while empowering individuals with IDD to make their own informed choices.

This workshop is facilitated by Nancy Spain, a seasoned legal professional with a strong background in guardianship, and Joan Martin, one of TotalLink's founding parents, who brings a wealth of knowledge and lived experience on this topic.

This workshop will provide families with the knowledge to make informed decisions about the best support structures for their loved ones. Attendees will leave with a deeper understanding of their options and tools to navigate the path toward greater independence and self-determination.

We encourage open discussion, questions, and sharing of experiences to ensure every family feels confident in their choices for the future.
